As of 2001, North Beacon Street had been restriped with two travel lanes, bike lanes and a parking lane on the river side. The bike lane terminated in this odd fashion at the bridge. Whoever designed the markings had determined that bicyclists would, and should, cross the four lanes of North Beacon Street as pedestrians. But crossing in this crosswalk is perilous because of the short sight line due to the arch of the bridge, and the extra time needed to cross the eastbound lanes before reaching the westbound ones. Many bicyclists prefer to make a vehicular left turn from the middle of the roadway, placing the starting point of the turn farther from the bridge, and allowing the bicyclists to cross the westbound lane immediately upon having made the decision to go.
